Dementia and Its Causes Part II

Dementia Due To Disease

In addition to the familiar negative issues connected to Alzheimer's disease and reduction of cognition, multiple diseases also exist that bring on dementia. It's a fact, most dementia is due to brain disease and the worst of it is that the impact is truly deadly and hard to deal with it as it progresses. The destruction from the various types of dementia end up destroying the parts of the brain critical to  feelings, being able to remember, the ability to make decisions and to speak. The majority of cases of dementia are due to four dissimilar states, all of which have specific difficult problems:

Alzheimer's Disease

It's a fact that 67% of all cases of dementia are Alzheimer's, making it the most prevelant type. Plaque and tangles start showing up throughout a person's brain, causing issues that prevent brain cells from operating normally, progressing as time goes on to the point of complete annhiliation. the problems start in the parts of the brain for both decision making and remembering and then expand to incorporate the brains cerebral cortex, the part of the brain that gives us the ability to think. Sadly, Alzheimer's disease is not curable.

Vascular Dementia

This type of brain damage is cuased by body arteries that are blocked or vastly narrowed, normally due to a stroke. Destruction caused by a stroke, so far, cannot be fixed, but treating the cause of stroke, like high blood pressure, can slow down or stop vascular dementia from becoming worse. The different issues of this type of dementia totally depend on the section(s) of the brain impacted by the stroke. In the past vascular dementia was looked at as one of the main reasons for dementia, but in recent years one of the more prevelant reason is Lew body dementia.

Lewy Body Dementia

Round protein structures called Lewy bodies grow in brain cells, moving them and breaking their ability to function normally. Including today, the exact reason for the growth of Lewy bodies, no one knows for certain. In recent years in many circles LBD is viewed as one of the leading reasons for dementia, just behind Alzheimer's.

Frontotemporal dementia

Dementia in this form involves the frontal lobes of the brain. This section of the brain over time degenerates. As this form of dementia progresses it negatively impacts a persons ability to behave properly, make decisions and their personality becomes different. This form of dementia is fourth in line in occurances of the total instances of dementia in people, but for people under 65 it is the 2nd leading reason.

Dementia is caused by multiple other reasons all connected to brain disorders. However the number of occurances is far less than the main ones mentioned there. The other brain disorders leading to dementia include meningitis, syphilis, AIDS, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Huntington's disease and Parkinson's disease.

Dementia and Its Causes Part I

November 11, 2016 in: Assisted Living Phoenix AZ, Causes of Dementia Phoenix AZ,

Most people in Phoenix, Arizona and elsewhere ponder what actions could have been taken during one's life to keep from getting permanent ongoing senior memory loss also known as dementia. It's a fact to acknowledge and be aware of, there are several factors connected to causes of dementia that people cannot do anything about. Several types of dementia are connected to a selection of illnesses and there are types of dementia tied to a person's genetics. Recently  there was a story reported on TV that covered an the fact that an entire family in a region of the country of Chile called Antioquia with the same gene all came down with early onset dementia. This occurance presented clear evidence that genetics for alzhiemers in a family directly correlates to getting alzheimers. Several other reasons one may get dementia connected to a person's genetics include Pick's disease, also known as Lewy body disease and frontotemporal dementia and Huntingon's disease.

Head trauma caused by brain injury from sports, lack of oxygen, brain tumors and heavy metal exposure my lead to dementia at some point in life. Dementia from head traumu due to boxing known as dementia pugilistica and from a brain injury from an accident like a car wreck or fall are also factors leading directly to this awful illness. The actual dementia may be from fluid build-up, infection, swelling or direct tissue damage.

The upside to all these facts is that not all the cases of demenetia are permanent. The path to decline mentally can be reversed or halted when the issues causing the problems are handled quickly. Family members and caregivers can assist the people they love if the know about dementia caused by physical injuries that have occured, followed by quick action addressing the issue. Additionally and very importantly, assisted living (such as the Phoenix, AZ assisted living offered by The Palazzo) offers a smart logical way to stop potential head injury living hazards and provide a beautiful solution that provides for a seniors self-respect and continued independence.

Here's the good news: in some of these cases, the course of mental decline can be stopped or even reversed if the problems are addressed soon enough. Caregivers can help their loved ones by being aware of the physical causes of dementia and getting help as soon as possible if there has been an accident or injury. Also, assisted living can be a great way to prevent environmental hazards while also maintaining seniors' dignity and independence.
