February 06, 2017 in: Great Ways to Keep a Senior Fully Hydrated,

Many people do not know this, but one of the premier reasons seniors arrive in the emergency room is because they are not adequately hydrated. Be smart about it and use the 8 glasses of fluids per day rule and follow it.  The fact of the matter is, the best type of liquid is water, but each type of liquid will help with hydration. It is critical to keep a close eye on the intake of sugar and to stay away from alcohol intake. Featured here are several sources of hydration you can put into play to keep your loved one hydrated:

  1. Water - This is #1 on the list
  2. Milk - Chilled cow’s milk, rice milk, or soy milk.
  3. Coconut Water - This is great for natural electrolytes
  4. Iced Tea - Fruit-flavored herbal teas and black tea
  5. Popsicles - All fruit natural are awesome
  6. Coffee with Milk or Half and Half - It’s all about the liquid
  7. Soup - Great for quality nutrition and fluid intake
  8. Smoothies - Fantastic for calories and fluids. Include protein powder, yogurt and fruit
  9. Tea - Herbal tea or caffeinated tea
  10. Juice - Make it 100% juice if at all possible. Great for nutrition and hydration

Hydration is important at all ages, but staying hydrated is critical to the health and well-being of seniors. It is very important to set up daily strategies that you and your loved one follow so they stay hydrated each and every day.
