What’s the Difference Between Assisted Living and Independent Living?

September 17, 2018 in: Assisted Living Phoenix AZ, Independent living,

When it comes to deciding on the accommodation for your elderly loved one, you have two choices in front of you: assisted living or independent living. Choosing either one depends on how much assistance your loved one requires daily. Can they manage the daily activities such as taking a bath, doing household chores, managing medicine, driving, etc, on their own?

Say, your loved one is at the initial stage of osteoporosis but cannot get up on his own in the morning. He needs assistance with getting up from the bed and walking to the bathroom. Without any support, he might fall and worsen his condition.

In a situation like this, it is better to admit your loved one in an assisted living facility, where they have help 24/7.

Assisted Living vs. Independent Living

Assisted Living

This living option provides individuals with assistance in all daily activities. The residents are given plenty of freedom to do what they desire and they have the additional bonus of around the clock help readily available. Assisted living is mostly for those people who usually have a problem with mobility or are not able to handle daily life tasks. They receive services from meal preparation to cleaning, maintenance, housekeeping, laundry services, transportation and more.

Services Offered At an Assisted Living Facility

  • All utilities
  • 3 meals a day and snacks
  • Weekly laundry and linen service
  • Wi-Fi and cable
  • Weekly housekeeping service
  • Daily trash removal
  • Daily bed making service
  • Transportation to shopping trips and medical appointments
  • Life alert pendant allowing residents to alert the facility in case of an emergency
  • Individually controlled air conditioning and heating

It is a maintenance-free lifestyle where residents can take full advantage of engaging in activities, attending events and having outdoor trips. They have no responsibilities on their shoulder, as their caretaker is always on sight and the 24-hour emergency service provides them with a safe living environment.

Independent Living

As the name says, independent living gives people the freedom they need to live without any restrictions. Most of them are healthy and whole but need a stimulating environment where they can meek like-mind people. Independent living provides residents access to medical care, dining, entertainment and more. It’s a complete package where they are the owner and require minimal assistance with daily activities. Since people living in an independent living facility are capable of doing things on their own, services such as laundry, housekeeping and meal preparation are not provided but are available on demand.

Services Offered At an Independent Living Facility

  • All utilities (no telephone)
  • Continental Breakfast
  • Lunch or dinner - resident’s choice
  • Housekeeping service every other week
  • Wi-Fi and cable
  • Life alert pendant allowing residents to alert the facility in case of an emergency
  • Activities and events
  • Transportation for shopping trips and medical appointments
  • Individually controlled air conditioning and heating
  • Trash rooms
  • Complimentary laundry rooms
  • Walk-in closets
  • Storage units facility with no additional cost

Now you know the difference between an assisted ling facility and independent living facility. Do take into account your loved one’s level of activity and mobility before making a decision. Remember to be kind to yourself; this is not always the easiest decision to make. Some of the Most Popular Card Games for Seniors

July 13, 2018 in: Assisted Living Phoenix AZ, popular senior card games,

Playing games can provide all the stimulation needed for the brain to get activated, improving concentration and memory.

There is some research to back the case for games being able to slow down the onset and effects of Alzheimer’s in the elderly. Games have the potential to keep the minds of seniors suffering from dementia, occupied and active.

Card Games Allow a Much Needed Social Outlet for Seniors and Improves Their Mental Well-Being

Card games in particular have the effect of strengthening the social bond between the players. For seniors, it can provide socialization and interaction, so that a greater sense of community develops. This improves mental health tremendously.

Seniors no longer feel isolated as this social interaction allows them to get closer to like-minded people of the same age. If you, as a son or daughter, decide to join in, their isolation can further be decreased, leading to better mental health and happiness.

Here are Three of the Card Games that are suitable for seniors and are Easy to Learn

1.Crazy Eights

Crazy eights is a card game that can be played by 2-7 people at a time. For games with more than 5 players, you will need to have 2 decks of cards. It begins with 8 cards being dealt to each of the players. The number of cards falls to 7 if there are only 2 players.

The remaining shuffled deck is left on the table, face down. The first card on this deck is turned to face upwards. The players then match their cards with the suit and rank of that particular card. The matched cards are discarded. If a player cannot match, they keep on taking cards from the deck till they can match the card.

The one who discards all cards first wins. An 8 card can be played at anytime to show the suit that you want the other player to match. This is where the game gets its quirky name from.

2.Poker

This is quite popular among people of many ages, including seniors. There are a number of combinations that can happen and are scored accordingly, like two, three and four of a kind, and different kind of flushes with the highest being a royal flush of the spade. Each player is dealt two cards and places bets in different rounds. Five cards are placed face down, which are turned over one after the other, and the player that gets the most points at the end of all rounds with the best combinations wins.

3.Rummy

This game has many variations and can be played with 2-6 players in a single game. The objective of Gin Rummy is to get a meld or run of cards. A meld of cards is basically a three of a kind. A run is a suit sequence of 3 cards. You need to discard your cards as melds or runs, and get greater points than your opponent.
